Shopping in Puerto Viejo — What the Town Offers and Where to Find It

Puerto Viejo is not a shopping destination — it is a living community. The shopping experience reflects that: practical, personal, community-oriented, and refreshingly free of the mall culture that defines so much of American consumer life. For most retirees, this simplification feels liberating rather than limiting. Here is what to expect. For grocery shopping specifically, see our dedicated guide: Groceries in Puerto Viejo: Upscale Supermarkets, Local Markets, and Real Prices.

The Weekly Farmers Market — The Social and Commercial Heart of the Week

The Puerto Viejo weekly farmers market is one of the most enjoyable regular experiences the town offers. Held on Saturday mornings in the town center, the market brings together local farmers, artisan producers, and food vendors in a lively, colorful gathering that serves as much as a social event as a shopping trip.

At the market you will find freshly harvested tropical produce at prices 30 to 60% lower than supermarket rates — mangoes, pineapples, avocados, yuca, plantains, papaya, dragon fruit, fresh herbs, and whatever is in peak season. You will also find artisanal products: local honey, handmade cheeses, cacao products (Puerto Viejo is cacao country), baked breads and pastries, Caribbean prepared foods ready to eat, and handmade crafts from local artisans.

Most Magnolia Reserve residents who attend the Saturday market describe it as one of their favorite weekly rituals — not just for the shopping but for the social warmth of running into neighbors, chatting with vendors they have come to know, and experiencing the town at its most alive and communal.

Cacao — Puerto Viejo's Specialty

The Talamanca region is one of Costa Rica's most important cacao-growing areas, and Puerto Viejo has a thriving artisanal chocolate scene. Look for Bribri indigenous cacao products — dark chocolates, cacao powder, and drinking chocolate made from heirloom varieties grown in the Talamanca mountains using traditional methods. It is among the finest chocolate you will taste anywhere in the world, and buying it directly from the producers is the only appropriate way to honor its origins.

What Else Is Available — Local Shops and Services

Artisan and Craft Shops

Several small artisan shops in Puerto Viejo's town center sell indigenous Bribri crafts — woven bags, carved seeds, jewelry, and textiles — as well as locally made jewelry, Caribbean-themed art, and handmade clothing. Prices are reasonable and buying directly from artisans ensures the full value goes to the maker.

Pharmacies

Two well-stocked farmacias operate in Puerto Viejo, carrying prescription and over-the-counter medications, basic medical supplies, personal care products, and vitamins. For the full medication guide, see: Prescription Medications in Costa Rica: What's Available and What to Bring.

Hardware and Home Supplies

A ferretería (hardware store) in town carries basic home maintenance supplies. For larger purchases — appliances, furniture, or major home items — Limón (45 minutes) has significantly more options.

Clothing

Basic clothing — shorts, t-shirts, swimwear, flip-flops — is available in several small shops in town. For anything beyond casual tropical basics, plan a trip to Limón or bring preferred brands from the U.S.

At Magnolia Reserve, residents enjoy the benefit of our concierge service for coordinating shopping trips to Limón for those who want a broader range of products, and we maintain a community cooperative for bulk purchasing of commonly needed items that saves residents both time and money.
