Bocas del Toro — Panama's Caribbean Jewel, Just Hours Away
One of the unexpected gifts of life in Puerto Viejo is proximity to Bocas del Toro — a stunning archipelago of islands in northwestern Panama that represents some of the most beautiful Caribbean scenery in the Americas. What sounds like an exotic international destination is, from Magnolia Reserve, a comfortable day trip or easy overnight: about 1.5 hours by taxi to the border, plus a short water taxi across to Bocas Town.
Bocas del Toro is consistently ranked among the Caribbean's most beautiful destinations — crystal water in shades of turquoise and jade, stilted wooden buildings painted in bright Caribbean colors, world-class snorkeling over living reef, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that complements everything Puerto Viejo offers. It is different enough to feel like a genuine escape, and close enough to make it a regular pleasure rather than a special occasion. How to Get There — Step by Step
- Step 1 — Taxi to the border: From Puerto Viejo, take a taxi or shared shuttle to the Sixaola-Guabito border crossing. Journey time: approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Cost: $15–$25 USD by private taxi, or $8–$12 per person by shared shuttle.
- Step 2 — Border crossing: Exit Costa Rica and enter Panama at the Sixaola bridge. The crossing is straightforward — show your passport, exit stamp on the Costa Rica side, entry stamp on the Panama side. Allow 20–40 minutes for the crossing, longer on weekends.
- Step 3 — Water taxi to Bocas Town: From Almirante (the Panamanian town after the border), take a water taxi to Isla Colón (Bocas Town). Journey: 30 minutes. Cost: approximately $5–$8 USD each way.
- Total travel time from Magnolia Reserve to Bocas Town: approximately 2.5 hours.
Crossing into Panama and returning to Costa Rica effectively renews your 90-day tourist visa — a benefit many pre-residency expats use strategically. Once you have your Costa Rican residency, this is no longer necessary. Bring your passport and ensure it has at least six months validity. U.S. citizens do not need a visa for Panama.
What to Do in Bocas del Toro — The Highlights
- Snorkeling at Starfish Beach — shallow, calm water over a reef dense with tropical fish; you can wade rather than swim, ideal for seniors
- Dolphin Bay — resident spinner dolphins frequently visible from tour boats in the bay
- Bocas Town itself — walk the painted wooden boardwalks, eat fresh ceviche at a waterfront restaurant, browse the colorful market
- Red Frog Beach — one of the most beautiful beaches in the archipelago, accessible by water taxi and jungle walk; home to the famous poison dart frogs
- Catamaran or boat tours — half-day tours visiting multiple snorkel sites and beaches for approximately $25–$35 per person
Magnolia Reserve organizes a monthly Bocas del Toro excursion for interested residents — transportation coordinated from the property, border crossing assistance, and a guide for the day. It is consistently one of our most popular and anticipated community events.
